Our L81 engine is our modern take on the legendary Vortec 8100 because in our eyes, GM’s current 6.6L platforms are the closest thing to a true successor.
The L8T iron block is a solid foundation on its own. It performs well, and if you don’t mind the extra weight, it gets the job done… even if it comes with a few quirks. Nobody’s perfect.
Where we took things further was by stuffing the L8T 8-counterweight crank into an aluminum L86 / L87 / LT1 block, paired with a lightened forged rod and custom piston with a touch more compression. As usual, we upgraded the camshaft, deleted VVT, and installed stronger valve springs and pushrods to support the larger cam.
What you're left with is a 650+ horsepower engine that behaves when you want it to and absolutely rips when you need it to. A modern big-block feel without the big-block weight.
